At Spring Spur, caring for the land is not just good practice — it is central to everything we do. Our property and operations are guided by a genuine commitment to environmental responsibility, sustainable land management, and climate change. We are invested in the the long-term health of the High Country landscapes we call home.
Our Property and the Land
Our farm is managed with the health of the surrounding environment in mind. We actively plant native trees and plants across the property to restore habitat, improve biodiversity, and support local wildlife. Waterways on the farm are protected through fencing and vegetation buffers, and we maintain dedicated habitat zones for native species. Strict farm biosecurity practices are in place to prevent the introduction of invasive weeds and pests.
Water
We are committed to using water wisely. Our property incorporates grey water recycling and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce our reliance on potable water sources. Responsible drainage and soil management practices help protect the health of waterways across the property.
Energy and Buildings
Our accommodation and facilities have been designed with passive solar principles in mind, making the most of natural light and thermal mass to reduce heating and cooling energy demands. We continue to look for practical ways to reduce overall energy consumption across our operations. We currently have solar voltaic panels installed on the homestead and commercial buildings, and planned expansion to a battery system is planned for 2027.
Transport and Emissions
We have invested in electric vehicle technology on the farm, currently operating an EV Polaris for property management tasks. EV charging infrastructure for guests and operations is planned for installation in 2027.
Food, Local Suppliers and Low Food Miles
We grow food on the property and source additional supplies locally wherever possible, supporting regional producers and keeping transport emissions low. Choosing local and home grown means fresher produce, stronger community connections, and a smaller environmental footprint.
Waste
We maintain a waste minimisation policy across all areas of the business, focusing on reducing what we use, reusing where we can, and recycling appropriately. Single-use plastics are avoided and we continually look for ways to improve.
Looking Forward
We are currently working toward formally measuring and monitoring our carbon emissions to set meaningful reduction targets and explore offset opportunities where appropriate. We are proud to be working toward Ecotourism Australia certification, holding us accountable to a nationally recognised standard for environmental and cultural responsibility.
North East Catchment Management Authority — Climate Smart Agriculture Grant
We are pleased to have recently been awarded a grant through the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) under the Australian Government's Climate Smart Agriculture Program, supported by the Natural Heritage Trust.
This exciting 10-year land management partnership focuses on improving the natural assets and climate resilience of our property. Works being undertaken as part of the program include targeted revegetation using locally indigenous native plant species, waterway and riparian zone protection through strategic fencing, weed management, and the establishment of off-stream watering points to reduce livestock pressure on waterways.
The program is designed to improve biodiversity, protect and restore native vegetation, enhance habitat connectivity, and contribute to carbon storage and climate adaptation on our land. Progress is monitored regularly to track the long-term success of plantings and land health improvements.
We are proud to be participating in this program as part of our broader commitment to sustainable land stewardship and environmental responsibility in the High Country.

We encourage our guests to think about their own environmental footprint when travelling. The choices we all make — from how we get here, to what we eat and how we use resources along the way — add up to make a real difference.
A few things worth considering before and during your trip:Pack light and travel efficiently. Choosing direct routes, fuel-efficient vehicles, or public transport where possible can significantly reduce the emissions associated with getting here. If you fly, consider offsetting your flight emissions through a reputable program such as Atmosfair or Carbon Neutral.
Think about what you consume. Food choices, water use, and energy habits all contribute to your footprint. Opting for local produce, reducing meat consumption, and being mindful of energy and water use while you stay are simple but meaningful steps.
Calculate your footprint. Understanding your personal ecological impact is a great starting point for making better choices. A free tool is available at footprintcalculator.org. We are proud to be working toward Ecotourism Australia ECO Certification, which means our commitment to sustainability is independently verified against a national standard. By choosing certified operators like us, you are actively supporting responsible tourism.
